So a couple days ago I was lucky enough to be able to catch a theatrical screening of the latest DBZ movie, Battle of Gods. This is the most recent Dragon Ball Z movie to come out since 1996 which was when the anniversary movie, The Path to Power was released.

The movie is set a couple of years after Goku has defeated Kid Buu. The God of Destruction, Beerus awakens from his thirty-nine year slumber and is informed by his attendant, Whis about Frieza's defeat at the hands of a Saiyan. Before his decades long sleep, Beerus was told by the Oracle Fish that a mighty opponent would appear before him, the Super Saiyan God. Beerus and Whis then set out to find the Saiyan who defeated Frieza who of course is none other than Goku. Having beaten Goku with ease, Beerus then sets off for earth to find opponents who he hopes will provide more of a challenge.

Growing up, I was a big fan of the Dragon Ball franchise (and of course I still am). One thing I really wanted as a kid was to be able to see DBZ in theaters(and I mean an actual DBZ movie, not that crappy live action one) and finally, to use a reference to the show, "my wish was granted". Battle of Gods was some of the most fun I've ever had seeing a movie. As is to be expected with DBZ, the fighting was as fast paced as always and the animation looks beautiful. The movie has a strong emphasis on comedy which makes it feel more reminiscent of the original Dragon Ball than of Z but I found this a welcome change of pace seeing how DBZ and its movies were more serious than their predecessor. To see the entire cast, even the "villains" just goofing around and having fun was really enjoyable.

It's also interesting seeing how the "villain" of the movie isn't even really a villain at all but more just bored and wanting to have some fun. Oh, sure, Beerus threatens to destroy earth on numerous occasions but even then, he doesn't seem to attempt it out of malice seeing as how it's in his name, "The God of Destruction".

One thing that really stood out to me was the CGI used for the surroundings. While it does help to add new depths to the fighting, it also stands out too much. It feels awkward seeing a character animated in 2D moving past a three dimensional building. I also thought that the super saiyan god form itself was a little underwhelming. It looks less like a Super Saiyan form and more like Goku when he's in his kaio ken form.

Overall, it is a great movie for anyone who enjoys Dragon Ball Z. The fights are fun and fast paced, the humor is great and is even added into some of the fights and it's just great to see the old Z gang again.

It was a bad movie, I wish Toriyama would just end the series.
